Deadbeat Clients Who Won’t Pay

I am an owner of two businesses. One designs and leases websites and online shopping carts.  The other sells websites and provides graphic design work for both companies.

I have a client for whom I designed two websites.  Both are leased and he is paying fairly regularly for them.  Through the graphics firm I designed a logo, animations, print media (including banners and labels), a blog, and other graphics.  In each case I gave him below market pricing for the work, and I even did many things at no charge because of the ongoing website business.

He owes me a lot of money for the artwork (10 projects), some of the invoices go back a year.  Although I have email agreements for each project, HE WILL NOT PAY and refuses to respond to email and regular mail.  To add insult to injury, he is trying to trademark my work! 

He seems to have “selective email”.  He doesn’t respond to my email about the invoices as though his email is not working.  But, he is very quick to write if he wants a website change or has a complaint.  He wrote recently to say his shopping cart wasn’t working.  Actually, there was no problem with the cart, he had a customer entry error.  When I wrote to let him know the solution for his customer, I asked about the open invoices.  He suddenly became silent – again!

I have had my design company since 1987 and he is the first person to be such a deadbeat.  Sadly, I respected the man and his product.  I really messed up.  Although I knew better, I continued to provide a service to the freeloader.   Now I have to decide how to proceed with this joker.
